“What are you doing sitting out here by yourself?” Daughtry asked as he flopped down on the bench beside my chair.

Breakfast had been uneventful, if a little uncomfortable. All four of my brothers had asked me questions about my rehab, planned what we were going to do when I got home for good, told me stories of what was going on at home, and kept me laughing at their antics. In all that time though, they’d barely even acknowledged that Fain was there beside me.

After breakfast, Fain had gone to the apartment to shower and change, and my brothers had brought me back to the hospital for my first physical therapy appointment in the downstairs gym. I’d learned to fall. Not to walk, but to fall. They’d shown me the importance of protecting myself when I fell down and explained that it would happen more than I’d like to think.

Now, every muscle in my body was screaming about the lesson, and I just wanted to relax and stay calm.

“Just thinking.” I smiled over at him and then looked back at the kids who were playing in the grass. One of them had a prosthetic leg and the other had a prosthetic arm. It didn’t slow either of them down as they ran toward the jungle gym and play area a little further away. “I like to sit out here sometimes and watch the kids.”

“For a hospital, this place is beautiful.” Daughtry looked around for a second before his gaze went back to the kids. “They’ve even got that special equipment so all the kids can play.”

“Yeah,” I nodded. “And they do, morning to night. Run around like they don’t have a care in the world. Like they have all their parts and pieces just like any normal kid.”

“That age is something.” Daughtry shrugged. “They don’t let shit stop them.”

“It’s true.” I reached down and rubbed my knee, wishing I could rub out the ache in my missing limb. I’d worked hard in physical therapy today, and it was as if the muscles in my lower leg were all bunched up. The sharp pains were all in my head, and I knew that, but it didn’t make them hurt any less. “I wish I could be as happy as they are.”

“Why can’t you be?”

“I’ve got a lot going on, Polka Dot.” I laughed.

“Not any more than they do,” Daughtry said as he waved toward the play area. “Talk to me about Fain. I need to hear your side of things.”

“Will you listen?”

“Of course,” Daughtry assured me. “I’m the best at that, remember? It’s why I’m your favorite brother.”

“I don’t know what to do,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “Fain needs to move on and find some woman who can make his life whole. A woman who can give him babies and make a home with him. He shouldn’t be here wasting his life on me.”

Daughtry made a strangled sound and reached his hand out to turn my chair so that I was facing him.
